About Lennox Island First Nation
Lennox Island First Nation is a Mi'kmaq community on an island overlooking Malpeque Bay in northwestern Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island).
Lennox Island First Nation is a Mi'kmaq community whose island home is also known as L'nui Mnikuk, "the people's island." The island sits in northwestern Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island), overlooks Malpeque Bay, and is connected to the main island by a short causeway and bridge. Epekwitk lies within Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People, and the PEI Mi'kmaq honour the Treaties of Peace and Friendship.
Lennox Island is described as the first reserve in Canada owned by its people. At one time, all Mi'kmaq on Epekwitk belonged to one band, the Lennox Island First Nation. Today the Nation has 1,108 registered members, living both on and off reserve. In June 2025 the community elected Chief Tabatha Bernard, who followed Darlene Bernard, chief for nearly 20 years.
Culture and faith are central to community life. Each year the community gathers for its Mawi'omi on the last weekend in August, and on the last Sunday of July it celebrates St. Anne's Sunday, honouring St. Anne as the patron saint of the Mi'kmaq. The Mi'kmaq language belongs to the Algonquian language family.
The fishery is the community's largest employer. Services on the island include:
